Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Brick Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Famco-compatible chimney caps for most flue sizes found in Brick homes, with typical installed pricing running $285-$520 depending on cap style and whether the flue needs a custom adapter. Most Famco cap replacements we book in Brick are completed in a single visit, and we carry the common 8″×8″ through 13″×13″ galvanized and stainless sizes on our trucks. Homeowners usually realize their cap has failed when they spot rust stains on the chimney crown, hear animals scratching in the flue, or notice water spots on the ceiling near the fireplace after a hard rain off Barnegat Bay.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco produces several cap series that fit Brick-area chimneys, and matching the right one matters more than most homeowners expect. The Famco Wind Directional Cap and Standard Single-Flue Cap are the two we encounter most often on homes built between 1975 and 2005 in neighborhoods like Herbertsville and Shore Acres. The Wind Directional series rotates with the wind to improve draft, which sounds clever until the bearing assembly seizes after five or six years of salt-air exposure, a problem we see regularly on cap replacements near the Metedeconk River.

To identify your model, check the stamped label on the cap’s skirt or measure the flue tile opening precisely, outside edge to outside edge. Famco caps are sized to the flue, not the chimney crown, so a 9″×9″ flue takes a 9″×9″ cap even if the crown overhangs by several inches. We also install quality aftermarket equivalents when the OEM part is back-ordered, which has happened more than we’d like since 2022. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco, so we have no obligation to push one source over another. We simply match what fits and what lasts.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • Rust bleeding down the chimney face. Galvanized Famco caps begin showing surface rust at the seams after seven to ten years in Brick’s coastal climate. Once the zinc coating fails at the weld points, the cap sheds orange streaks every rainstorm, and the metal underneath thins faster than most owners realize.
  • Water in the firebox or a damp, musty smell after storms. A cap with a cracked or missing lid, or one where the mesh sides have pulled away from the frame, lets wind-driven rain straight down the flue. In Brick, northeasters push water sideways; a cap that looks fine from the ground can leak badly in a storm.
  • Bird or squirrel noise in the flue, or nesting debris falling into the fireplace. Famco mesh sides can corrode through at the base where creosote accumulates, creating gaps large enough for starlings and red squirrels, both prolific in Ocean County neighborhoods.
  • The cap is visibly tilted, missing, or sitting in the yard after high winds. Famco caps use either leg bolts into the flue tile or a compression band around the flue rim. Leg bolts loosen as flue tiles expand and contract through freeze-thaw cycles; we’ve found caps in flower beds after March storms more times than we can count.
  • Draft problems or smoke backing up into the room. A seized Wind Directional cap stuck in the wrong position blocks exhaust flow, or a cap with collapsed internal baffles creates turbulence instead of smooth draft. Either way, the fireplace becomes harder to start and smokier to run.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our installed pricing for Famco chimney cap replacement in Brick breaks down as follows:

Standard galvanized single-flue cap (8″×8″ to 13″×13″) $285-$365
Stainless steel single-flue cap, same sizes $385-$475
Wind Directional cap with adapter $420-$520
Flue tile repair or custom adapter (if needed) $75-$150 additional

What drives the range: cap material (galvanized vs. stainless), whether the flue tile is square or an unusual dimension, and whether we need to fabricate a custom adapter because the original installer used an odd transition. Every estimate includes removal and disposal of the old cap, installation of the new, a Level-1 visual inspection of the flue from the top, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The number we quote is the number on the invoice. We also document the finished installation with photos you can see, and we flag any crown or mortar issues while we’re up there, with a plain-English verdict on what can wait and what can’t.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check from the ground: confirming the cap is still present, looking for obvious tilt or damage, and listening for animal activity. What you cannot safely do is climb a pitched roof to measure, remove, or install a chimney cap. The fall risk is real, and so is the risk of dropping a cap or tool down the flue and damaging the liner. We don’t recommend DIY installation for this part.

We’ve also seen owners buy the right Famco cap online but discover their flue tile is cracked, oversized, or set at an angle that prevents a proper fit. That discovery happens on the roof, usually with the old cap already removed and weather moving in. Our technicians carry adapters, sealants, and the tools to handle what the job actually requires, not just what the box says. If you’re weighing whether to tackle this yourself, call us at (609) 657-3371 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing. No charge for the conversation, and no pressure to book.
