Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco crowns are found on their factory-built chimney systems and select venting products, most commonly the Famco chimney cap-and-crown assemblies from the 1990s through the mid-2000s. The critical identifier is the stamped model tag on the cap frame, usually visible from the roof without disassembly. Look for series prefixes like FCC or FCR followed by the flue diameter - 8, 10, or 12 inches are standard in Brick’s residential stock.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Famco changed their crown flange design around 2003. The pre-2003 crowns use a three-bolt mount pattern; post-2003 switched to a four-bolt pattern with a wider overhang. Mixing these up means the replacement won’t seat flat, and you’ll have a gap that funnels water straight to the flue. We carry both patterns and the transition gaskets that seal them.

OEM Famco crowns are still manufactured in limited runs, but we’ve had excellent results with aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Gelco that match the original specs. The aftermarket units use the same 5,000-psi concrete mix and stainless drip edge; the difference is price and lead time. OEM can take two weeks. Our aftermarket stock is on the truck today.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks radiating from the flue tile. These start small, barely visible from the ground, but they widen every freeze-thaw cycle. Brick sees 20 to 30 freeze-thaw days each winter, which is why crowns here fail faster than they do further south.
• Water dripping down the firebox wall after rain. This means the crown has lost its seal at the flue joint. The water isn’t just getting past the crown - it’s finding a path down the flue liner or the smoke chamber. Left alone, it will reach the damper and rust it solid.
• Spalling brick or crumbling mortar below the crown line. The crown’s job is to shed water past the brick. When it fails, water soaks the top course of brick, and by spring you’ll be picking pieces of facing off your roof.
• A rust streak running down the chimney face from the cap. That streak is the steel flue liner corroding from the outside in. The crown is supposed to keep water off that liner. The rust is proof it isn’t.
• The crown sounds hollow when tapped. A solid crown rings dull and heavy. A delaminated crown, where water has separated the concrete from its base, sounds like a loose tile. We’ve found this on three Famco crowns in Brick’s Windward Beach area, all within sight of the salt marsh.

These assemblies weigh 40 to 80 pounds, they’re often sealed with high-temp mortar that requires controlled breaking, and they’re positioned at height with the flue opening directly below. Drop a piece, and it goes down the flue. Slip, and there’s nothing to grab.
