Once the factory coating cracks at a corner or leg weld, Brick’s coastal humidity pushes rust through in two to three seasons. The streaks you see are iron oxide washing down with rain, and they’re staining your brick or siding.
• Mesh sides pulled away from the frame. Squirrels and raccoons test every cap in Brick. Gelco’s 5/8″ mesh is sturdy, but if the cap was never properly tensioned or the leg screws backed out, animals can pry the mesh from its channel. You’ll hear scratching or find debris in the firebox.
• Lid sitting crooked or blown off entirely. Gelco lids attach with stainless screws through a central collar. After enough freeze-thaw cycles, the collar can fatigue, especially on south-facing chimneys in Brick that expand and contract daily. A lid at an angle is a lid waiting to become a projectile in a March windstorm.
